Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist. However, to be eligible to obtain Medicare rebates you will require a referral from your GP. Under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP), a Medicare rebate of $141.85 per session is available for up to 10 sessions per calendar year using Medicare Item Number 80010 (correct information as of 2025, check Medicare website for more information).

How long is a session?

Sessions are 55-minutes in length.

How long does therapy go for?

The type of therapy I offer typically involves 1 to 3 years of weekly to fortnightly 55-minute sessions. The frequency and duration of therapy will depend on several factors and the expected length of therapy will be discussed with you.

You can decline or withdraw from therapy at any point - it is completely voluntary. There are a range of effective treatments and health professionals and it’s important you find the support that is the right fit for you.

I may also need to terminate therapy for various reasons (e.g., I form the opinion that the difficulties you are facing are outside my scope of practice and you will be better helped by a different professional/service, my employment situation changes). If this is necessary, this will be explained to you and you will be offered support with transitioning to alternative sources of assistance.

How much do sessions cost?

Sessions cost $280. If you are eligible for the Medicare rebate under a MHCP ($141.85), you will be $138.15 out of pocket. This means the cost of 10 x MHCP rebated sessions is $1381.50. (Information correct as of March 2025. For the most up to date information please check the Medicare website).

Payment is required in full after each session, and rebates are generally processed within 1 to 2 business days of receiving payment.

Please note that late payments of invoices incur an admin fee of $10 and further appointments cannot be made until the invoice is settled.

What happens if I can not make an appointment?

Changes made later than 9 am on the weekday prior to your scheduled appointment incur a fee of $100, unless it is due to something outside of your control, such as physical illness.
